Saluting the 2015 Costume & Textile Institute Inductees
Moziah Bridges, Designer At nine years of age, the entrepreneurial bow tie designer started Mo’s Bows Handcrafted Bow Ties in 2011. The native Memphian, now 13, originally asked his grandmother to teach him how to sew because he couldn’t find any bow ties that matched his style. With his bow ties currently sold in numerous specialty stores and with his own on-line store, Bridges’ success ignited his philanthropic spirit, spurring him to create the Go Mo! Summer Camp Scholarship Fund in 2012. To date he has made appearances on such television shows as Shark Tank (where he was the ultimate winner), Fox News’ America’s News HQ, FOX Business, the Steve Harvey Show, MSNBC, and the Today Show, and has also been featured in articles in Oprah Magazine, Yahoo!, Forbes, and Esquire.
Imogene + Willie, Designers Matt and Carrie Eddmenson founded Imogene + Willie in 2009 with one defining passion: to make blue jeans, an integral garment in the fabric of American history. Matt and Carrie were convinced to reclaim jean manufacturing stateside after years of witnessing America manufacturing being forced off-shore. They have succeeded in pursuing their convictions while building a clothing and lifestyle brand which preserves the simple principles of quality goods made and manufactured in the United States. Their distinctive style and taste has created a cult following grown primarily through word of mouth. Their original store, a one-of-a-kind space with inspirational decor housed in an old gas station in the burgeoning 12th Avenue South neighborhood, has also become a community gathering spot with the hosting of the couple’s now-legendary Supper + Song evenings. They have developed and grown a successful global e-commerce presence and have expanded their retail model to an owned and operated store in Portland, Oregon, all while selling their collection to more than 100 speciality stores throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan.
Johnathan Kayne, Designer Nashville native Kayne launched the Johnathan Kayne dress line after placing among the top five designers on the third season of the popular Bravo TV series, Project Runway (2006). The Magna Cum Laude graduate of New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology opened Kayne’s Clothing Boutique in Nashville in 2002, where he produced custom ballroom dance costumes, evening wear, and wardrobes for the country music industry. He then bought Southern Charm, an established boutique in Norman, OK. Following the acceleration of his career by his Project Runway experience, Kayne developed the Johnathan Kayne dress and shoe collections as well as the Johnathan Kayne by Joshua McKinley dress collection. Kayne’s appearances on E!, ABC, NBC, Bravo, and The Style Network have elevated his profile and given him such international acclaim that his brand is now sold in more than 3,000 stores in 40-plus countries. He relocated his business back to Nashville in 2012 and is branding Johnathan Kayne as “Your Go To Red Carpet Designer of the South.”
Stacey Rhodes, Stylist Longtime Nashville resident and O’More School of Design graduate Stacey Rhodes opened Stacey Rhodes Boutique, regularly frequented by celebrities and stylists, 12 years ago. Since then, she has styled and provided the wardrobe for both WSMV-TV Channel 4’s news anchor Jennifer Johnson, and most recently, Kacy Hagerty, host of “More at Midday” and “Better Nashville.”
Rhodes is well-known throughout the region for her annual “An Affair of the Hat” event showcasing exquisite, one-of-a-kind hats for Nashville’s Iroquois Steeplechase, the Kentucky Derby and other special occasions. Soon after originating her event in 2002, Rhodes teamed up with renowned Palm Beach milliner Carol Carr. Their partnership has produced hundreds of hats while elevating the event (a benefit for the TJ Martell Foundation) to an even higher level. Rhodes also presents a custom Carol Carr hat to the annual recipient of The Leading Lady Award at the Steeplechase LookBook Fashion Show. She served as co-chair of last year’s Sparkle & Twang, along with daughter-in-law Meagan Nordmann Rhodes.
Olia Zavozina, Designer Originally a native of Russia, the Nashville-based bridal gown designer moved the United States when she was 18. While still completing her MBA degree, Zavozina began her bridal design business with her flagship store, now located in the Green Hills area. Her gowns have been featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, Brides.com, Southern Bride magazine, and Premier Bride, as well as US Weekly and People Weekly. Once a seven-year-old who designed bridal dresses for her Barbie dolls, Zavozina’s dresses are sold in bridal boutiques throughout the U.S., as well as in select Nordstrom Department Store Wedding Suites nationwide.
